Thinking about moving to a smaller home?

Citizens Advice Hart is proud to work in partnership with Hart District Council to deliver the Smart Move service.
If you rent your home from a housing association and have more bedrooms than you need, Smart Move could help you find a smaller home that better suits your current needs and lifestyle. Whether you’re looking to reduce household bills, move somewhere easier to manage, or relocate closer to family or local amenities, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
How Citizens Advice Hart can help
Moving home can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. As part of the Smart Move scheme, our team can provide practical support throughout the moving process.
Depending on your circumstances, the Smart Move scheme may also offer:
- Cash payment of up to £5,500 (depending on the size and type of your current and new property) which can be used to help you settle into your new home
- Help paying for removal costs
- Practical support to help you move, provided through Citizens Advice Hart, including help with completing forms,
updating utilities, arranging removals and providing guidance and support throughout the moving process - Help to join the housing register and support to apply for advertised properties which meet your needs and preferences
- Increased priority on the Hart housing register
Could Smart Move be right for you?
You may be eligible if you:
- are currently living in a home within Hart that you rent from a housing association
- you live in a home that has 2 bedrooms or more, and you’d like to move to a smaller home which has at least one bedroom less than your current home
- you are registered on the Hart housing register (support can be provided to help you register if needed)
- your current property is your main home and will be available for re-let if you move to a new home
- you have kept to the conditions of your current tenancy, including paying your rent (applicants with rent arrears may be considered on a case-by-case basis)
If you’re unsure whether the scheme is right for you, we’d encourage you to get in touch. Having a conversation doesn’t commit you to moving, it’s simply an opportunity to explore your options and find out whether Smart Move could benefit you.
