What do you get when you combine 14 money workshops, 527 bright young minds, and one slightly exhausted but thoroughly fulfilled trainer?
The answer: a group of young people now equipped with the financial know how they didn’t know they needed — but definitely do!
In this piece, we hear from Community Training Lead Marcia, who shares what it’s been like to host these Work Out Your Money sessions so far.
The Breakdown:

Feedback from the students on what they learnt from the session
- 61 Year 6 students dived into “What is Money?”, learning how money evolved, identifying the cost of everyday items, and working collaboratively to calculate purchases and change—while handling real £5 notes like forensic accountants in training.
- 210 Year 7 students explored “Make It Count”, linking budgeting and saving to pocket money habits and future dreams. Whether it was buying their first phone or planning for university, these students began seeing every coin as a choice.
- 240 Year 11 students and 16 Explorer Scouts dove into “Starting Your First Job”, navigating payslips, income tax, and NI like pros. With activities focused on average salaries and public services, these future earners now know exactly where their taxes go. (spoiler: it’s not all street lights, potholes and bins).
The Outcome:
These workshops weren’t just informative—they were interactive, hands-on, and designed to transform bewildered blank stares into curious “aha!” moments. Whether it was decoding the Queen’s shimmer on a fiver or planning for that dream car 10 years down the line, each student left a little richer in knowledge.
The Ask:
This project has legs, heart, and clear impact. With funding, we can reach even more students, tailor content for broader age ranges, and keep turning financial fear into financial fluency.
So yes—exhausted? Definitely.
But inspired? Even more so.
Here’s to continuing this fantastic project—and making money workshops a regular subject in every classroom!
