Free school meals eligibility has expanded from September 2026

Families receiving Universal Credit may now be eligible for free school meals, following an expansion of the eligibility criteria from September 2026.
Previously, eligibility for free school meals could depend on household income as well as whether a family received certain benefits. Under the expanded criteria, all pupils living in households receiving Universal Credit can qualify for free school meals, regardless of household income, provided they attend an eligible school or college.
This change could mean more children and young people are able to access free school meals, helping families with the cost of everyday essentials.
How to check eligibility and apply
If your household receives Universal Credit, it’s worth checking whether your child is eligible. Hampshire County Council provides information about free school meals, including the eligibility criteria and how to apply online.
